Hype Before The Game.....
The Iowa State Cyclones(3-1) had their best start ever this year for a long, long, long, time. Coming into this game they were #5 in the country in defense. Iowa State led the nation in rushing, averaging 328.3 yards a game. Their star running back, Darren Davis, was the leading individual rusher in the nation, averaging 176.8 yards a game. Buoyed by these statistics, they actually thought that they could beat the Cornhuskers this year. I think NOT! Iowa State beat Nebraska only 2 times since World War II.
Quote Of The Game......
“They(Nebraska) did a great job
all day. They had big plays and they executed. They just ran
the same things over and over and we couldn’t stop them.”
--- Cyclones’ linebacker, David Brcka

The contest was pretty much decided by the end of the 1st quarter. Iowa State opened with an impressive series by driving to the Nebraska 19-yard line. But two penalties and a heads-up play by Husker’s Joe Walker, who sacked and stripped the ball from Cyclones’ QB, and recovered the fumble himself [is this man Superman or what?] effectively stopped the threat and Nebraska scored three touchdowns in the next 10 minutes. Nebraska took advantage of Iowa State miscue and scored on I-Back, Dan Alexander, 7 yards run with 8:02 left in the 1st qtr. Iowa State shot themselves in the foot again when Ralph Brown scored on a blocked punt by Randy Stella with 5:44 left in the 1st qtr. Matt Davison 47 yards reception from Eric Crouch (who said Nebraska cannot pass?) closed out the qtr. putting the Huskers ahead 21-0. Correll Buckhalter’s 7 yards run with 3:13 left was the only score in the 2nd qtr. Nebraska came out in the 2nd half with a lightning strike from Eric Crouch to Bobby Newcombe that went for 24 yards (who said Nebraska cannot pass?) with 13:32 left in the 3rd qtr. Nebraska scored again in their 2nd possession of the 3rd qtr with Eric Crouch running 20 yards into the end zone to put Nebraska ahead 42-0. Nebraska emptied the bench after that by playing the reserves for the rest of the game. Demoine Adams (who?) started the scoring in the 4th qtr by returning a fumble caused by Joe “Superman” Walker for 37 yards to put the Huskers ahead 49-0. Iowa State closed out the 4th qtr by going to the end zone twice, a 35 yards run and a 2 yards run, both by Darren Davis to make the final score 49-14.
